Hao-Wen Shi — Parsons Festival 2022

Collection

Interconnected uses the lens of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a way of understanding the body and it is viewed from a holistic perspective, specifically thinking about meridians, the zang-fu organs, and qi. The meridians create lines and shapes on the body, while the organs inform the material choices. The use of pulse as a common tool for diagnosis is also incorporated through materiality. The theories of Yin-yang and of the Five Elements, from ancient Chinese philosophy, represent the overall interconnectedness of the body and its various systems.

This collection deepens our understanding of our own bodies to promote a healthier lifestyle. It aims to be practical for the everyday, fit for regular movement and activity as guided by TCM, as well as have a feeling of floating and growth, reminiscent of Spring and Summer.

Image: Color coded topstitching is used throughout the collection to indicate the associated elements and systems to the appropriate meridian, using the already associated colors of the elements. Thickness of thread indicate yin or yang.

Bio

Hao-Wen Meryl Shi is a womenswear and and accessories designer originally from the Bay Area in California, now based in New York City. Shi draws inspiration from her experiences and various identities, often exploring topics related to her cultural identity as an American born Chinese. She also explores themes of family and ancestry and creates work relating to her family relationships.

While studying at Parsons School of Design, pursuing her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, Shi interned at ML Monique Lhuillier and Joomi Lim, expanding her knowledge of womenswear design and jewelry design. Now as a recent graduate, Shi seeks to continue creating wearable pieces and functional accessories for the modern individual.
